In 2019, the Lawrence Prospera rolled out the SISU PRINTS Screen Printing program as a vocational training offering at the SISU Center. In 2022, Lawrence Prospera expanded the program to include the SISU PRINTS Embroidery shop.

In the SISU PRINTS shops, young adults learn the basics of the clothing design and development process. All participants will learn the basics of screen printing and Embroidery, as well as some graphic design if they are interested.   Young adults also have the option to create and produce their own designs.

On September 13 2018 my friend was killed in the Columbia Gas explosion. I was sitting in a car with him and was inches from getting struck by the falling chimney that took his life and injured several of my other friends. I went from being a regular kid to being depressed and unmotivated. For a long time, I didn’t feel the same and gave up on a lot of opportunities and friendships. Then a coach suggested I check out the SISU program. I was immediately drawn to the screen printing room where you learn how to print on T-shirts, Sweaters, and Sweatpants. A while back, I started my own brand named A1Drip and was taking money out of my own pocket to pay for the printing. At SISU I was able to make my dreams a reality. I am now able to either screen print or embroider my desings onto clothing myself.

I learned that I don’t need that middle person, I can be the person.

The  Naturalization Program Offers:   joelJoel Pena has always aspired to be an American Citizen. He was able  to move to the United States in 2012 from the Dominican Republic when he was 19 years old.

Joel has Cerebral Palsy, but has never let it hold him back in life. As a child, Joel had very little opportunity for education. He had a lot of setbacks and challenges to get to school due to no transportation- aside from his difficulty walking. Joel, like all of us, just needed the right support and opportunities to grow. Joel’s spirit and advocacy  has never let his disability, poverty, neglects/abuses, or sexual orientation limit his dream.

Thanks to the Department of Developmental Services, The Arc, and Grimaldy Rios, Joel was able to find a Shared Living Home provider where he feels accepted and loved as a family member. With the support of his team and technology Joel was able to successfully study for his U.S. Citizenship interview. This entailed learning how to read, write and learn English. After much effort and perseverance this year Joel finally received his American citizenship, 2 certificates of completion for English and is in the process of completing his GED.

Joel’s ultimate goal in life is to become an inspirational speaker and mentor, especially for those going through similar things in life he did. Today, Joel feels accepted in life.
